What is Alpha?

This page is meant to share a little more about what the Alpha Course is all about. Click on the green question bars below to find out more about that question. If you still have questions after reading this page contact the Alpha Leadership Team (Darren & Tracy Emery, Steve Ratliff, and Randy & Heidi Harris) via the Alpha contact page or by emailing alpha@faithmanhattan.org.

What is Alpha?

Alpha is a practical introduction (or reintroduction!) to the Christian faith.   A typical Alpha session includes a time to enjoy a meal, a presentation on a topic of the Christian faith, and an opportunity for discussion.  Each week features a talk on different topics such as “Who is Jesus?”, “Why Did Jesus Die?”, “How Can We Have Faith?”, “How Does God Guide Us?,” etc.  Free childcare is available.

We all have questions.   Alpha offers a safe place to explore the questions of life.  Life is full of tough times, shaky employment, relationship struggles, and illness.  No matter what you are facing, Alpha is a place to ask why with the freedom to share or just sit back and listen.

Building relationships is a central part of Alpha.  Some of the closest and most long-lasting friendships have been built on Alpha.  They go way beyond the standard "What's your name? What do you do?", so you connect on a more personal level.  The Alpha Weekend (a retreat of fun and experiential learning) is a great time to hang out, relax, and enjoy the stimulating talks and one another.  It's amazing how much fun Alpha can be!

Who is Alpha for?

Anyone!  People come to Alpha for different reasons, from different backgrounds and with different opinions.  Alpha has been helpful for many--actually, millions (Alpha was started in London and has since spread around the world)-- investigating the Christian faith.  Alpha has been a great experience for newcomers to the church, new Christians, and Christians who are looking to be rejuvenated in their faith!

In summary, Alpha is enjoyed and appreciated as much by those who have never set foot in a church as it is by regular church-goers.
